S:LAB ELECTRONIC MEDIA WORKSHOPS

INTRODUCTION to ELECTRONIC MEDIA & PROJECT FORMULATION - $60
Instructors: Mark Brady, Ben Bogart
Mon. Oct. 23, from 6 to 10 PM

Introduction: A/V-supported presentation of New Media artworks with an overview of different approaches to electronic arts practice. Survey of many possibilities and strategies for the design and construction of electronic artworks and creative use of technology. Introduction of multimedia programming software for artists.

Project Formulation: Participants bring their ideas, sketches and concepts to share with the group and get advice from instructors on which workshops to attend and how to proceed in realization of their projects.

VISUAL MEDIA - $200
Instructor: Ben Bogart
Sat. Nov. 4, from 2 to 6 PM
Sun. Nov. 5, from 2 to 6 PM
Tues. Nov. 7, from 6 to 10 PM

Cinema, video and photography are all visual media. In this workshop we will look at how images, both moving and still, recorded and generated, can be used in electronic media. This workshop is an introduction to the visual programming language Pure-Data. In order to work with visual media we will use the “Graphics Environment for Multimedia” (GEM) library for Pure-Data. By the end of this class participants will know how to create simple images that respond to commands in real-time.

SONIC MEDIA - $200
Instructor: Mark Brady
Sat. Nov. 11, from 2 to 6 PM
Sun. Nov. 12, from 2 to 6 PM
Tues. Nov. 14, from 6 to 10 PM

Following the Visual Media workshop this class will introduce participants to using Pure-Data with sound. We will work with recorded sound and experiment with fabricating sound from scratch from inside the computer.
By the end of this class participants will be able to record and play back sounds and use commands to transform them in real-time.

PHYSICAL/KINETIC MEDIA - $200
Instructor: Rob Symmers
Sat. Nov. 18, from 2 to 6 PM
Sun. Nov. 19, from 2 to 6 PM
Tues. Nov. 21, from 6 to 10 PM

A course for learning the fundamentals of electronics so you can build your own creative circuitry, intended for those interested in kinetic sculpture, robotics and sensor technology. The workshop will focus on learning about construction, materials and basic electric components such as switches, resistors, LEDs, photo transistors, relays, hall effect sensors, timing circuits, transistors, electric motors and their types. By the end of the workshop participants will have built their own 5 amp power supply or a simple kinetic sculpture to take home.

MEDIA INTEGRATION - $200
Instructors: Ben Bogart, Mark Brady
Sat. Nov. 25, from 2 to 6 PM
Sun. Nov. 26, from 2 to 6 PM

After becoming comfortable with creating images and sounds in Pure-Data and making physical objects move, we can now concentrate on linking visual, sonic and physical media. In this workshop we will look at how to make computers send commands to one another as well as how to make computers and electronic circuits send commands back and forth. In order to connect electronic circuits to Pure-Data we will use the Arduino board.
By the end of this workshop participants will have visual, sonic and physical media interconnected through Pure-Data.

SHOW and TELL
Tues. Nov. 28 from 7 to 10 PM

An open and casual evening to present what you have developed through the workshops.
