| SPECTRAL ARRANGEMENT 1
David Grove
Spectral Arrangement 1 is a light based installation comprised of 16 sources which vary in intensity over extended periods of time. The individual light sources, mounted on the walls of the space, have been treated with lenses to project elements of light out into the room. Diffraction of the sources through the lenses produce splinters of focused and unfocused coloured shapes to fall on the walls, floor and ceiling of the room. As each set of lights changes independently from one another, an ever dynamic output is produced. The slow change can be observed by experiencing the piece over long periods of time or by viewing it over several visits to the space.
This method of communication attempts to expand our attention span by harboring an experience of meditative observation. Our relationship to space and time is greatly affected by the current trends of high paced media dissemination. Also affected by these forces is our ability to hold trains of thought and to focus on single ideas. This piece acts as a proposal for a slower cultural paradigm through reward that comes only to those who stop and look.
In this piece I am also investigating our experience with architecture and indoor spaces through this alternative method of illumination. By setting the environment in a constant state of change, as in natural environments, Spectral Arrangement 1 attempts to provoke a dialog around the artificiality of our indoor lighting environments.
