Description: Audio Hardware for sound artists: Let's get busy. What's an XLR cable? What's a frequency response curve? $10 000 for a microphone! WTF!!!
Together we'll try and make sense of a pile of speakers, amps, mics, cables, circuits, boxes with holes, and other gadgetry we can use to play with sound. The physical stuff of sound production will be the focus of this workshop. Do I need/want to purchase/rent a fancy speaker or can I get away with a cheap disassembled computer speaker? Why use a dynamic mic as opposed to a condenser mic? These questions and more will be discussed and applied. Learn how to make good decisions about hardware for Sound Art.

This is a two-part introductory workshop to the Ableton Live audio software with special emphasis on its uses for sound art and experimental music. Ableton Live is a non-linear realtime audio sequencing and manipulation software (www.ableton.com). In the first part, we will go over all the main functions of Ableton Live: playing and manipulating clips, midi functions, effects and Ableton Live's powerful realtime functions. In the second part, we will explore various ways to interface with Ableton Live as well as its more experimental uses, such as for installations, connecting with other software (i.e. PD, Max/MSP, other).
Prerequisites: An interest in sound or art or both. A basic knowledge of recording and editing digital audio would be beneficial.
What you need to bring: Ideally participants should bring their laptops with Ableton Live installed. There is a free demo version available for download on their website: www.ableton.com. For the second part, bring any interfaces you may have (i.e. Midi keyboard, drum machine with usb or midi connection, home-made contraption with some form of midi connection, joystick, other)

For this two-part workshop we will venture into the meat of Ableton Live. We will integrate the basic concepts introduced in the previous Ableton Live workshop and create more complex Ableton Live Sets. We will also explore the performative aspects of Live. It is strongly recommended that participants come with Ableton Live Sets that they are currently working on.
The first session will present a more complicated Ableton Live Set and introduce performance techniques. The second session will focus on participants' projects and/or specialized aspects of Ableton Live such as 'Max for Live'.
Prerequisites: Intro to Ableton Live workshop or basic knowledge of Ableton Live.
What you need to bring: Ideally participants should bring their laptops with Ableton Live installed. There is a free demo version available for download on their website: www.ableton.com.
In this workshop we will learn how to generate and manipulate sound using graphical programming language Plogue Bidule. It is similar to Max/Msp but cheaper and easier to learn. It allows you to visually patch together "objects" in a virtual sound studio and use the resulting patches for music/sound composition or live performance.
The workshop will cover the basics of working with Bidule, including patching, routing, mixing, tone generators and sample players, different kinds of inputs and outputs (audio, MIDI, spectral), making your own objects, and using VST and AU plugins in Bidule. The workshop will be part lecture, part lab with practical examples. Those who bring their Mac or Windows laptop will receive a special demo version of Bidule. Previous sound experience is an asset but not required.

Adobe Lightroom supports a very easy and intuitive workflow compared to Photoshop. It also contains unique tools for image management and organization which come very useful while dealing with a large number of pictures. This intensive workshop provides an in-depth understanding of Lightroom. It covers all modules and tools available in the program including catalogues and collections, rating and filtering, non-destructive editing, working with camera raw files, and exporting for print and web (flash).

The irony of digital photography is that it is now so easy and convenient to take good pictures, yet people are too overwhelmed by these advances to take advantage of them. In this workshop participants will learn how to manipulate ISO settings (sensitivity of "film"), when to use spot metering or regular metering, how to use aparture priority and shutter priority, how to set white balance, and how to do post processing. The workshop will be hands-on, with an extensive question and answer session.
The intention of this workshop is to introduce artists to the creative possibilities of Flash. In Flash, one can create animated movies from scratch, or import graphics, photos, video, and audio created with other programs and use Flash to animate them. The participants will learn about Flash painting and drawing tools (and how they differ from other programs), creating symbols (the three types, and their characteristics), interactivity (including an intro to Actionscript, Flash's programming language), publishing for web, and more.
Many filmmakers and video artists put a lot of effort in creating work that only gets seen by a few. After one or two screenings the films get shelved never to be seen in public again. Enter the age of web video where low budget films have the potential to be seen by thousands if not millions.
But what happens when my film is out there? If I put my film on YouTube do I still own it? Can I generate income from my creations? How can I protect my creations?
In this workshop we will examine the "Terms of Use" agreements of popular sites such as YouTube, and I-Film, sites that profit share with creators such as Revver and MetaCafe, sites that offer free hosting of high quality video like Archive.org and OurMedia.org, and new technologies like video podcasts and internet tv.
HTML & WEB DESIGN Custom workshop, one-on-one.
Cost: $40 per hour
Instructor: Julie Gendron
Please call 604.872.8337 or email education@vivomediaarts.com to schedule
Learn the basics of interactive design, html and css to promote yourself and your work. You will be taught the structure of web design, domain purchasing and hosting, and bring in your own designs to receive individual instructions on what works and what doesn't. Understanding of Photoshop or a similar graphics program is required for this course.
A base knowledge of electronics gives the artist the opportunity to introduce electronic circuitry into a variety of media including sculpture, sound, and light-based works. This course will cover some basic theory of electronic principals that is essential for beginning to work with this medium. From there we will look at some of the components that make up simple circuits and that create the building blocks for more complex circuits. Students will learn some of the basic skills needed for electronic work such as soldering, breadboarding, and reading a schematic. These skills will be used to build a simple audio amplifier. We will experiment with different inputs such as contact microphones and how to modify the sound output from the speaker.
The cost of materials that you take home with you ($10-15) is included in the workshop fee.
CIRCUIT BENDING 2 sessions x 3.5 hours Mon/Wed September 27 & 29, 6-9:30 PM Mon/Wed October 25 & 27, 6-9:30 PM Mon/Tue November 29 & 30, 6-9:30 PM
Circuit bending enables artists to work with complex circuitry without any prior knowledge of electronics in order to create works spanning a variety of artistic media. By adding new variables we can transform and customize circuits that would be too complex for most of us to build from the ground up. We will cover all aspects to get you started with circuit bending, from prying open your first case to putting the knobs on a completed project. Bring 1 or 2 circuits to bend and any parts or modifying elements that you would like to use (we will have some modifiers on hand). Here are some ideas for circuit bending starting points: keyboards, radios, answering machines, portable televisions and tape decks. Don't let that limit you though. It's going to be exciting.
The cost of materials that you take home with you ($10-15) is included in the workshop fee.
KINETIC MEDIA & ELECTRONICS 2 sessions x 3.5 hours Mon/Wed October 11 & 13, 6-9:30 PM Mon/Wed November 8 & 10, 6-9:30 PM
Cost: $150 or $120 with Producer Membership
Instructor: Rob Symmers

A course to “make your art move”, intended for those interested in kinetic sculpture, robotics and sensor technology. You will learn how to use electric motors with microcontrollers and how to build your own creative circuitry with components such as switches, resistors, LEDs, photo transistors, relays, hall effect sensors, timing circuits, transistors, and their types.
This is a hands-on workshop, focused on participants’ individual projects. Students are
encouraged to have a project in mind or bring one to work with. Students without anything specific will be given a small electronic project by the
instructor on the second day.
SLAB
The SLAB is a Studio LAB for electronic media artists, technology enthusiasts and people who like to tinker. SLAB offers workshops and facilitates collaborative projects, providing artists with peer support, mentorship and technical assistance. The projects conclude in public exhibitions and events (e.g. Votes for Sleepwalkers).
