INTERESTED + POTENTIAL BOARD MEMBERS 2006/2007

Kevin Guest

Kevin Guest has viewed thousands and thousands of hours of television. When not doing that he completed a BA (1999) in Greek & Latin Language & Literature from UVic and an MLIS (2002) from UBC (library school). He enjoys observing creatures, making puns, being competitive at sports, singing on the sidewalk, and painting incorrectly with watercolours.

Kevin's interest in video art has developed in the last few years. He has made some rudimentary compilations of television clips, and has acted in one short film, to which he contributed original music for the soundtrack.

What Kevin could bring to the Board is knowledge of fundraising, as he currently works in the research department of the BC Children's Hospital Foundation. He has learned how to identify prospective donors and to strategize in their cultivation and solicitation, and has strong writing skills. Kevin is interested in gaining experience with a non-profit arts organization as he aims to move from health advancement to a cultural arena.

Kim Lear

Kim Lear has a BFA from Simon Fraser University and has focused her professional attention on communications, outreach and project coordination in the cultural sector.

Kim has coordinated and associate produced independent documentary films in Canada, the US and Singapore as well as the CBC series, Docs on the Coast . She worked in development with ArtStarts in Schools for two years and is now project managing for artist/filmmaker Chris Welsby and working on program development with The Education Company.

She volunteers on the Kids Around the World Museum Project Board and has assisted on advisory committees for the New Forms Festival. In the 1990's Kim produced her own short films and videos, some of which aired on WTN's Shameless Shorts and screened in Canadian and US Festivals.

She hopes to re-introduce art making into her life ... soon.

David Lee

David Lee is an amateur videographer who has gained fame and infamy amongst friends and family for wedding videos and other shorter videos (not of family vacations by the lake though). He did have a short film that was awarded third place at a local surf film festival in Sydney, Australia. He has an MBA from UBC and after a career in management and information technology consulting, now works for a non-profit organization based in the Downtown Eastside.

He has a strong personal interest in applying what he has learned from business and making a difference in the non-profit and arts sectors - without the assumption that "business knows best". He believes that his strong and varied background in consulting, along with his interest in video and enthusiasm to be a part of a team of creative and diverse people, would make him a strong contributor to the Board.

Heather McDermid

Originally from Ontario, Heather moved to Vancouver in 2004.   After working for a year as Education and Outreach coordinator for Vancouver New Music she currently finds gainful employment as marketing and communications manager for Eponymous, handling communications for 5 non-profit arts societies (Vancouver New Music, The Holy Body Tattoo, Kidd Pivot, Lola Dance and Anatomica).

After completing a Bachelor of Humanities degree at Carleton University in Ottawa, Heather moved to Halifax to continue studies at Dalhousie University for a year.   While there she became involved with CKDU as host of 'Rebels Without Applause', a 2-hour weekly show.   This motivated a decision to head back to Ontario to begin a degree in Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson University in Toronto.

While studying in Toronto she worked as a TA (religious philosophy and media ethics/journalism) and audio studio assistant at Ryerson, as well as taking occasional jobs crewing (indie-film and tall-ship).   To fill the radio void, she revived her radio show on Spiritlive, RTA's Internet radio station.   After finishing her studies at Ryerson in 2004 she continued further west to Vancouver.

Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, Heather completed a tech internship at Video In and has continued to be involved as a volunteer, casual technician and member of the equipment committee.   Recently she has served on the 'sound jury' for Signal and Noise 2006, and as an adjudicator for applications to the Media Arts Committee artist-in-residence program.

In her spare time, Heather plays various musical engagements as part of the fake pirate band The Creaking Planks.   She also spends time making new-timey noises on old-timey instruments and vice-versa.   Once in a while she leads willing zombies through the streets of Vancouver.

Lisa G Neilsen

Lisa g is a storyteller. She has published short stories for Hot & Bothered 3 and 4 - Short Fiction on Lesbian Desire, published by ARSENAL PULP PRESS.

She has performed as her vapid, untalented rock'n'roll alter ego, Pam, and most recently incognito with her hand made genitalia puppets. Her videos get screened at festivals around the world: Blue Tuesday (a stop motion heartbreaker) won Audience Choice at IMMAGINARIA in Bologna Italy 2003 and the UO Queer Film Festival in Oregon Washington in 2004. Girl on Girl: a documentary (a collaboration as the Miss Nomer collective) premiered in Out On Screen, Vancouver's Queer Film and Video Festival, in 2004 and was the recipient of ZED's People's Choice Award for best short film. In spring 2005, Girl on Girl won both best male director and best female director in the shorts categories at the Inside Out Queer Film and Video Festival in Toronto. Girl on Girl then secured the Miss Nomer Collective a Community Heroes Award in Vancouver. Lisa g is currently working as senior editor/technical director on two projects for the National Film Board. In one project she helps kids tell their stories by teaching them Final Cut Pro and Photoshop. In the other project she and her team helps seniors tell their stories using digital technology.

Lisa g has participated in art talks in high schools and taught children in a summer theatre program. She believes art and youth go hand in hand in shaping a more positive future and knows that seniors hold the stories of our past. Lisa g hopes her work for the arts or the community is honest, funny, inspirational, inclusive and educational - or all the above!

Being an artist that has been distributed and archived by Video Out since 2002, Lisa g would like to say thank you and thus hopes to give back to this valuable Vancouver artist center. Her interests lie in outreach to student and seniors communities, developing strong strategic relationships with institutions like the VIFF and building links with more diverse media arts communities, such as animators.
